It’s time for another round of anti-ageist birthday cards

In 2020, Changing the Narrative launched an anti-ageist birthday card campaign, calling for artists to design cards that countered the usual, depressing narrative about getting older. The resulting designs defy negative views and celebrate the joys of aging.

The campaign has been more successful than we hoped. People have told us that we need more messages in birthday cards that are clever and fun, without all the age-bashing. So, it is time for a new call for designs! Our focus for this campaign is on messages that make us smile or even laugh in celebration.

Changing the Narrative is challenging US greeting card designers to make more cards that celebrate aging. The greeting card industry has many examples of brands proudly supporting people of color, women’s rights, and the LGBTQ community. We’d love to see this trend grow to include more age-positive greeting cards.

Are you a greeting card designer in the US? Want to be associated with a social movement and reach an audience ready to celebrate age? Submit your application for a chance to be selected to produce an age-positive birthday card.

Find more details on our website. Selected artists will receive a commission and share joint rights to the card.  Applications are due October 28, 2022 and we will notify winners by November 2, 2022. Designs will be due December 16, 2022. We’ll promote and release the new cards in January 2023.
